Life on hold

One of the things I have noticed in my own thinking is a sense of suspended activity until things get “back to normal”. The idea of “waiting it out” feels so imprisoning. Making the “best of a bad situation” also seems to generate a negative state of mind. What if we shift our thinking about the pandemic?


We are born to handle this

The human experience is not supposed to be a vacation. Our ancestors dealt with terror on a daily basis. Many people in a COVID-free world experience trauma on a daily basis. This is not new for the human experience. We are built for this, and we are equipped for this. Don’t be surprised when there are struggles or challenges. That is how life is supposed to be. It is how we move through these obstacles that matters.


As humans we have a tremendous capacity to suffer, and and amazing strength within to continue forward, even when the unimaginable happens. Resilience is a defining characteristic of the human race.


What if this is normal life?

Consider if you were a martian who came down to earth for the first time. You would think that this is the way life rolls on the Earth. Social distancing, attention to sanitation, online schooling for students would all be normal.  This is just the way it is here.  What would you do as a martian? Would you be sitting in a state of suspended activity?

Our bodies and brains are in this moment. Consider how you might live in this moment fully without labeling it as the suspension of normal. Consider how you can go about your life without wishing things were different.


The future is uncertain…and always has been!

Rewind to 3 months ago. Did you feel certain about the future? Pretty sure about how you would be spending the summer? Feeling a sense of calm and peace about your summer plans? Guess what… You were wrong about that.

Three months ago did you spend your days worrying about all of the horrible things that could go wrong? Probably not. That would have prevented you from living. So why do it now?

You can give yourself the same luxury today. You may think you know what is going to happen in three months from now, but the truth is, you don’t really know. You will never have certainty about the future, and really you don’t certainty about the future to live constructively in the present.

The future is always uncertain, not just today…always. Generally, we just don’t panic about it. We just don’t give it a lot of thought. We never actually knew what tomorrow would bring – COVID or no COVID.


What you can be certain about

If we cannot be certain about the future, what can we be certain about? For sure we can be certain that we are alive, and that at some point we will die.

We can also find certainty in who we want to be today. Our certainty lies in our choice of how we want to show up in the world, and respond to whatever is happening.

We don’t really need any more certainty than this to go about living our full life experience, pandemic or no pandemic.
