I thought it might be kind of fun to do a blog post about the music that helped me get through my 4 year separation. Not the sappy stuff that made me cry, but the songs that empowered me to evolve from doormat to fierce warrior.
Stronger by Kelly Clarkson
This was my divorce anthem. “Think you got the best of me…think you got the last laugh. What doesn’t kill ya makes you stronger, stand a little taller, doesn’t mean Im lonely when I’m alone.” Such great lyrics that still resonate today. Helped me show up bravely to kick butt in court.
Shake it Off by Taylor Swift
Absolutely essential during the smear campaign. “Cause the players gonna play… and the haters gonna hate… I’m just gonna shake… Shake it off, shake it off.” These lyrics reminded me not to get upset when when the ex brought his girlfriend to dinner at our golf club, or when his daughter saw me at the local Loblaws and called me the “C” word. I became a boss at shaking it off.
Blow Me (One last Kiss) by Pink
This song could have been written about my marriage. “I won’t miss all of the fighting that we always did…No more sick whiskey dick, no more battles for me.” Sorry for the TMI but Pink showed me that I am not the only person to experience this. When I listen to this song on my bike my cadence goes through the roof.
My separation was the birth of a healthy relationship with myself. A journey to find my worthiness and become someone who has her own back. I am truly grateful to the artists who composed these songs that became part of my journey. I would love to hear your divorce anthems. The songs that helped you become the fiercest version of yourself.
